President Donald Trump signed an order to speed federal review of psychedelic drugs, including the controversial substance ibogaine, the Arizona Daily Star reported.
The order directs a faster review of psychedelics and related therapies, the newspaper said. The text of the order and the specific agencies assigned responsibilities were not included in that report.
Ibogaine has attracted support from some combat veterans and conservative lawmakers, the article said. The drug is controversial because it can sometimes trigger potentially fatal heart problems.
Supporters have promoted ibogaine for addiction and recovery in recent years, while medical and regulatory bodies have raised safety concerns because of its cardiotoxic effects, the report noted.
